Families

Every person needs a community where they are loved and supported, and where they feel that they belong. As we think about the different communities that a person belongs to, we need to note the wide diversity in family structures including:

  • Nuclear families – traditional family structures with two parents and at least one child

  • Single-parent families – a single person with their kids

  • Extended families – with many relatives living together

  • Childless families – two partners without children

  • Stepfamilies – two partners and children from previous (and possibly current) relationships

  • Grandparent families – at least one person and their grandchildren

Each family will have their own dynamics and the types of interpersonal obstacles that they face. As a result each family will have different needs in terms of family and relationship services and social services as a whole.
